Gorgeous Ugly Movement Collective

What is G.U.M?

Founded in 2020 by Artistic Director Genna Moroni, Gorgeous Ugly Movement (G.U.M.) Collective is a place where movement artists explore their range and ability to tell stories through physicality. Every process first begins from an honest desire to uncover and highlight distinct, talented and diverse voices in movement. Each dancer’s personal history and experience in the field of dance and life itself makes its way into the collaborative process of a new piece.

When developing new works, Genna believes the best art includes multidisciplinary exchange. The reason it is a “collective” is because each new G.U.M. work prioritizes the collaboration between multidisciplinary artists. Storytelling with those who speak different art languages puts a new lens on the creative process. Curiosity, spontaneity and playfulness to communicate in a new way lay the narrative path.

G.U.M. Collective is there when artists need it and want it…As an entity, G.U.M. is a bit amorphous, which is its beauty.

artistic director: Genna moroni

Genna is an LA based dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Her primary dance credits include performing, developing and staging works with Barak Marshall and being a founding member of Ate9 Dance Company. She has performed at renowned venues like Jacob’s Pillow, White Bird Dance, CAP UCLA, The Joyce Theater and American Dance Festival.

Genna debuted G.U.M. during REDCAT NOWFEST 2020. During the pandemic she felt the need to create a safe space to find her creative voice and connect with other artists craving to grow.

For Genna, G.U.M. is not intended to be a company, but a home base. Something that is there when it is needed. Something to reset and recharge. Something to inspire creativity and opportunity and a bit of hope.

  • G.U.M. is calling from the void

"In Genna Moroni’s world, the voices calling from the void are contradictory, omniscient, hilarious and dreadful. You know, the voices we all have: the pressures, the inner critics that hold us hostage. Moroni’s voices are represented by extraordinarily talented dancers and a witty narrator — who, despite facing existential dread, are carrying on in all their complex beauty.”

  • G.U.M. at REDCAT’s 17th Annual NOW fest

"Choreographer Moroni’s solo was a compilation of all the previous personalities and we got to see, and feel, her acting abilities. She is a beautiful mover and this new work offers promise of much more wonderful dances ahead.”
